SICAT Employee Helmut Buhler Receives Sponsorship Award from Bonn-Rhine-Sieg University of Applied Sciences

Segmentation and Classification of Teeth in DVT Data by Means of Deep Learning – this is what the final thesis of SICAT employee Helmut Buhler was about, for which he was awarded the 1000 Euro prize of a Society of Sponsors of the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences.

In cooperation with SICAT, Helmut developed a comprehensive program system with which teeth can be localized and identified in 3D DVT data of the jaw regions both manually and automatically. It was shown that the Deep Learning based procedures developed in this way provide extremely efficient and reliable segmentation and classification results. From both a scientific and an application-oriented point of view, these are particularly valuable findings which impressively expand the current state of the art in the field of ML-based tooth classification.

The prizes are awarded annually to graduates by a Society of Sponsors of the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences. This promotes the internal development of the university but also supports the networking of the university with the regional economy.
